No living room is really complete without a coffee table as a central piece, but simply placing the table there without any decor just isn’t enough. Often people have trouble deciding how to decorate their coffee table. What style and what should go on it? Should I use a tray and what type of decor? As anyone who’s tried will know, styling a coffee table it’s not very easy – function and aesthetic are equally important.
So, balance is the key, your coffee table should be styled but not packed with decor, doesn’t have to look empty but doesn’t have to lose its purpose either. Lets take a look at some key elements you can use to create your coffee table vignette.
One decorating guideline you can apply is the “Rule of Three”, it’s a very simple rule, basically, odd numbers always look better in design, for a coffee table three is just perfect. These can be three single items or three groups of items.
Pretty books are a must on any coffee table, they are great for your guests to look at and add sophistication and art flair to your vignette. Choose medium-sized books or albums with pictures, paintings and artwork, and stack them in groups of three. Also bear in mind the color palette in your space, and try to choose books with spines that match your color scheme.
Another key element is to have a try on your coffee table, it anchors the arrangement and helps to divide the table into different areas. Styling your coffee table with a tray will also gather the smaller pieces and make them look more purposeful, rather than just looking like a messy bunch of stuff that hasn’t been put away. By putting them all in a tray it’s also easier to move them somewhere else if you need the table for a Saturday night pizza for example!
You could opt for an oval or round tray if you want to soften your vignette a bit, or a square or rectangular shape if you already have some edgy objects on your table. Depending on the size and shape of your table you can place the tray in the centre as a stand alone piece or to one side as a part of a vignette.
Your coffee table tray can be filled will all sorts of beautiful decor items such as; candle holders, small plants, photo frame, potpourri, small boxes, sculptural pieces, etc. it’s important that they work together as a whole and that they connect either through color, style, shape or theme.
Size matters! Consider the size of the table itself, big coffee tables look best with larger-scale objects rather than lots of little items, on the other hand small tables might look off-balance with big pieces. Last but not least, hide away all utility items – remote controls, coasters, glasses etc – in a pretty box, they’ll be safe & sound, and available anytime you need them.
