This is a dilemma that most people come across whilst renovating their kitchen or dining area. Should I choose a round kitchen table or a square one? It’s quite a big deal actually.
Personally, having a round kitchen table is always been one of my “must have” furniture pieces. I think I spent more time deciding over which table I should get, that on the overall kitchen’s design. Unfortunately, I had to settle for a rectangular table. But simply because my kitchen is quite small, and there was no way I could fit a round table with a set of four chairs comfortably in it. Such a shame!
Round Table Pros & Cons
Round tables really stand out and break up the rigid lines of modern kitchens. Also, round shapes are ideal if you have small children at home, sure they will not hit their heads on corners. Plus they make a wonderful focal point in any room.
I believe that round table are more “social” as well. Because people are all equally distant from one another, easier to hold conversation and share food. Not to mention the wonderful designs you can find available nowadays. Most brands and designers are making round tables a returning trend.
The most important thing to take into account when considering buying a round table is the number of people you usually seat around your dining table. Round tables are not ideal for larger gatherings, as most dining rooms are not large enough to accommodate large round dining tables. Ideally you want 4/6 people to sit on a daily basis.
Square and Rectangular Table Pros & Cons
Squares and rectangular tables are by far the most popular, no doubt about that. I guess because they are very versatile and adapt easily to any space, even smaller ones. Also because our rooms are rectangular or squares, so it makes sense that they look more “appropriate”. A lot depends on the final look and style you wish to achieve.
Surely, it’s a lot easier to tuck away a square table in a corner or against the wall to gain some extra space. But it’s also true that they lack a bit of charm and contribute to create extra corners and edges.
Moreover, you need to consider how many people do you usually have over for dinner and the size of your room. Most square or rectangular table come with an extra leaf for extending the length, should you need to seat additional guests. So, if you require a table that can accomodate a large number of guests, this shape is what best suits your needs.
To sum this up, round tables are back and very trendy at the moment. They add character and interest to the overall design. But you need to make sure that you have enough space for the table and the chairs too. Squares and rectangular tables are a safe bet, and ideal if you are short of space or prefer linear and minimal shapes.
Last thought, consider that each chair requires to have at least 40 cm of space behind to freely allow a person to sit. You should also take into account the number of people and guests you plan to have regularly for dinner.
Hope this helps you to make the right choice on which table is best for you, looking at the functionality as well as design.
